Backcountry Fishing

It was a foggy calm morning down in Cudjoe Key, the clients were ready to get picked up from Venture Out. It was going to be an amazing day on the water. I also decided to bring 3 boxes of Menhaden chum, 1 box of Herring, and some Ballyhoo to get the fish chewing. I decided that were going to cruise in the backcountry and go fishing in the channels. It was an outgoing tide and there was lots of activity on the flats. We ran to a spot where it was 15 ft off the edge of Kemp Channel and close to Johnston Key. We put out our chum slick. We caught Mangrove Snappers (a.k.a. Mangies) and other species such as Porgy’s and Grunts (a.k.a. Florida Keys Pork Chops.) The clients were from North Dakota and usually ice fish for Muskie. They have a large ranch with cattle. It was freezing back home so they were happy to be in warm weather in the Keys. It was a fun time with great people who appreciated being on the water.
